Raising Kids Outside Canggu: The Case for Space

Canggu is where most families land in Bali, and for good reasons: the schools, the clinics, the other families. It is also where a particular conversation starts, usually about a year in, usually on a school run that has stopped moving. It goes: we came for a garden and a beach, and we spend our day in traffic between walls.

The stretch one coast west — Seseh, Nyanyi, Kedungu, and the villages behind them — is where that conversation increasingly ends. Here is the case, made honestly.

What children get

Room. The defining purchase west of the Canggu line is space: gardens measured in are rather than metres, compounds where a child can be sent outside without a plan, rice fields at the wall. The same budget that buys a courtyard in Berawa buys a lawn in Buwit.

A beach that teaches. Kedungu’s break is soft, slow and sandy-bottomed at the learning peak — close to the opposite of the crowded, punchy rivermouths east of it. Children learn to surf here in the practical sense: in the water most mornings, with room to fail safely. The crowd is a handful of locals who know them by name within a month.

A childhood with Bali in it. The villages here still run on the ceremonial calendar. Galungan means penjor over the lane and school friends in temple dress; the subak channels still carry water to real farmers. This is not a themed backdrop. It is the ordinary life of the place, and children absorb it as theirs.

An afternoon problem solved. Nuanu, ten minutes away, has quietly become the family utility of the coast: the Jungle Kids playground, the Magic Garden, alpacas, a free-flow public park that allows dogs, festivals through the year. Between that, the beach and the garden, the “what now” hours that structure family life have more answers here than the area’s size suggests.

The school run, which decides everything

Families organise their lives around one drive, and here it is short: ProEd’s campus inside Nuanu runs Cambridge from nursery to Year 11, roughly ten minutes from Kedungu. And demand for schooling on the site is compounding — Nuanu’s second school operator, Genius School, reported enrolment up sixty-five percent year on year in 2026 and is expanding capacity several-fold. Two growing schools inside one campus tells you what other families have concluded.

Two honest caveats. The campus currently stops at Year 11, so families with children heading into final exams need a plan — Canggu Community School, thirty to forty-five minutes east, runs to eighteen. And drive times on this coast are real but must be tested personally, at 7am, before any commitment. The full Bali school set — Green School, Bali Island School — is not commutable from here, whatever a listing implies.

The honest column

Healthcare is the real trade. A regional private hospital in Tabanan town is twenty-five to thirty-five minutes; international-standard paediatric emergency care is an hour or more, in Kuta or Denpasar. Canggu families are forty minutes from BIMC. For most families most of the time this is theoretical. Deciding about it consciously — including where you would go and how — is part of moving here like an adult.

Fewer families, for now. The playdate density of Berawa does not exist yet. The school is changing that at speed, but a family arriving in 2026 is early, with what early means in both directions.

Logistics. No public transport, one supermarket (a good one, at Buwit), a driver or a second scooter as standard equipment, and internet checked per village rather than assumed.

What it costs, roughly

This is the part that surprises people. Kedungu-area leasehold land runs 12–17 million rupiah per are per year against Canggu’s 27; freehold at roughly 560 million per are against Canggu’s 1.5 to 3 billion. A family villa with a real garden — the thing that is functionally extinct at reasonable money east of Seseh — is still an ordinary purchase here.

On the yearly rental market the same logic applies for families not ready to buy: more villa, more garden, and a landlord grateful for a two-year family tenant.

The case, summarised

Move here if the childhood you are trying to build involves water, grass, animals, ceremony and unscheduled time, and you are willing to drive for everything else. Stay east if what your family runs on is density — of friends, activities, clinics and cafes — and the garden is negotiable.

Neither answer is wrong. But it is worth noticing which question Bali was supposed to answer when you came.
