Where to Eat, Surf and Spend a Sunday Around Kedungu

Three years ago this section of coast had warungs, one hidden resort and a beach. It now has enough of a map to be worth drawing — while still being the kind of place where drawing the whole map takes one page.

The surf, by tide and temperament

Kedungu is the home break: rock and sand, three peaks, at its best around mid-tide on a windless morning. The middle peak is soft and slow — one of the friendliest learning waves on the island — while the headland throws a proper left over rocks for better surfers. Shoulder seasons, March to May and November to December, suit it well. The hazards are the rocks at the headland and a shore break at higher tides; the crowd is small and unhurried.

Nyanyi, in front of Nuanu, is a mellow reef with lefts and rights, fat forgiving walls on most days, shared mainly with local surfers and fishermen. Pig Stone, by Luna, stays quieter still.

Yeh Gangga, fifteen minutes further west, is the step up: punchy peaks that are playful at mid-to-high tide and turn into heavy, draining barrels at low — a genuinely advanced wave hiding in a fishing village. Balian, further on, is the west coast’s classic rivermouth A-frame and works on all tides.

The honest comparison with Canggu: the wave quality east is higher; the experience here is better. What this coast sells is space in the water, and it delivers it daily.

Eating, from warung to tasting menu

The spread is wider than the area’s size suggests.

At the everyday end: the warungs — Lio’s Shack at Batu Tampih for Balinese, Warung Pizza and Pickles, and the beach warungs where lunch is a modest note and the view is the same one the resorts charge for. Tmo Coffee does mornings; Downtown Kedungu does brunch.

In the middle: Tipsy Pigs, ribs over rice fields; HALOKEDUNGU for Chinese; The Swell, a pool bar that solves the hot afternoon problem.

At the top: the bar and restaurant at Nirjhara, the riverside resort that was here before the area had a name among visitors, and — since August 2026 — Nusantara at Nuanu: nine regional Indonesian kitchens under one roof at Warung Nine Islands, and Meja 36 for a tasting menu when the evening justifies it.

Nuanu, used properly

The 44-hectare creative campus at Nyanyi rewards being treated as a set of habits rather than a day trip. Luna Beach Club for the sunset hours. The Aurora forest walk after dark — a kilometre of light installations through the trees. Magic Garden and Jungle Kids for children, alpacas for smaller children, the Lumeira dome sauna for adults in recovery from all of the above. Nuanu Park opened in mid-2026 as the free-entry, dog-friendly front door, and the festival calendar — Suara, the FOTO photography festival — gives the area the cultural pulse it never pretended to have before.

The second phase is under way: a Moroccan-inspired culinary hub, a fashion village, a museum. Next door, Ciputra broke ground in early 2026 on Senja Beach Club inside its 60-hectare beachfront estate — restaurant levels, sunken pool bar, event lawns. Not open yet; worth knowing about, because it describes where the area’s Sunday is heading.

A Sunday, assembled

Early water at the Kedungu middle peak while the family sleeps. Breakfast at Tmo or the beach warung. Late morning at Nuanu — park, playground, alpacas, or the gallery depending on who won the negotiation. Lunch at Nine Islands. The hot hours at The Swell or home. Padel at Jungle Padel at four, or the drive to Yeh Gangga if the tide chart says so. Tanah Lot for the postcard sunset when there are guests to impress; the beach at the end of your own lane when there are not. Dinner at Tipsy Pigs, or Nirjhara when it is an occasion.

None of it requires a reservation made in advance or a parking strategy. That sentence, more than any list, is the area guide.

What is missing, so you know

A proper gym and a yoga scene — Canggu still owns those, twenty-five to forty minutes east. Nightlife past ten. A second supermarket. Those arrive on their own schedule; the beach club under construction and the second phase across the road suggest the schedule is short.

For now the area sits in its best window: enough on the map to live well, little enough that Sunday still feels like yours.
